he Charter of Homage and Fealty is a document that shows the relationship between a lord and his vassal. Feudalism was a political and social system in which land, known as fiefs, was granted by a lord to a vassal in exchange for military service, loyalty, and various other duties. The Charter of Homage and Fealty formalized this relationship. The vassal would swear an oath of fealty to their lord, promising loyalty, support, and military aid whenever required. In return, the lord would grant the vassal a fief and protection. This document was signed in 1110 by Bernard Atton, Viscount of Carcassonne, and Lord Leo, abbot of the monastery of St. Mary of Grasse. The charter shows the fealty and homage for the castles, manors, and places that Bernard Atton’s ancestors held from Lord Leo and his predecessors. The document also lists the castles, manors, and places that Bernard Atton holds in Carcassonne and other regions. The charter is important because it shows how promises of service were rewarded with a fief - lands that the vassal could use to support himself and his family. Sermon For Pope Innocent III: Pope Innocent III’s sermon is a spiritual interpretation of the events described in Mark 16:1-8. This sermon is divided into three parts, each focusing on one of the three women who went to anoint Jesus’ body. The three women are shown as symbols of the three different types of lives: lay, religious, and clerical. The spices that they bought are shown as good works. Both of these readings talk about religion and how there are good and bad outcomes to these situations.
