The Late Middle Ages Assignment 7

Both the Black Death and Covid 19 made the world pretty stressful at the time since they both could kill you if you didn’t have treatment for them. When these epidemics started to hit harder around the world many people were afraid of what was going to happen next and what the next move was. Many countries couldn’t fight these pandemics because they didn’t have the materials other countries had at that time and they were expensive so many people died. As these pandemics grew over time, it was very easy to catch them and spread them to one another. The death rates for these pandemics were significantly high at the time because they spread to older adults and younger children and they had weak immune systems, so they had little time to live. While the Black Death was caused by flea-carrying rats, COVID-19 was caused by these droplets called SARS-CoV-2. However, there are also significant differences between COVID-19 and the Black Plague. First, the known mortality rate of the Black Plague was significantly higher than that of COVID-19. Estimates suggest that the Black Plague resulted in the deaths of 75-200 million people, with mortality rates ranging from 30-50%. In contrast, the mortality rate of COVID-19 is believed to be lower, with varying rates depending on factors such as age, pre-existing health conditions, and access to healthcare. Although these two pandemics seem different, their outcome on society changed the world in their periods. While COVID-19 and the Black Plague are different in many aspects, the impact of both pandemics serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of human societies to infectious diseases and the need for global cooperation, research, and investment in public health infrastructure to prepare for and respond effectively to such crises.
