Rome Assignment 4

These stories from these excerpts hold important messages and had an impact on society at its time. An example of this is The Rape of Lucretia which was all about honor. This story is important to Romans because it shows someone overpowering another person. In the end, this event ended the monarchy and started to the republic in 590 BC. Overwhelmed by the shame and dishonor, Lucretia confided in her husband and father, and they vowed to avenge her pain. Lucretia, in a tragic display of her suffering, stabbed herself to death. In her dying moments, she expressed her desire for justice to be served, calling upon her family and friends to rise against the tyranny of the Tarquin's. Lucretia's rape and subsequent suicide became a catalyst for political change. Her tragic story motivated her husband and father, along with influential figures like Lucius Junius Brutus, to lead a rebellion against the Tarquin's' oppressive rule. This event marked the end of the Roman monarchy and the beginning of the Roman Republic in 509 BCE. Another example is the education system at that time. People with tons of knowledge could get corrupted and have false knowledge spreading around. The Rape of Lucretia represents the Roman values surrounding virtue, honor, and the consequences of sexual violence. Lucretia's unwavering commitment to her own moral integrity, even in the face of unspeakable pain, highlights the importance of chastity and the sanctity of family in Roman society. People without honor will most likely die or be tortured.
